Brecon U14 33 Ystradgynlais U14 19

Brecon U14s hosted Ystradgynlais RFC at Parc de Pugh for the first of two fixtures against the Swansea Valley team in the next month.

Brecon had a number of players missing and required the services of an Ystradgynlais player in order to make up the numbers.

Brecon again made their customary slow start and did well to keep out the constant onslaught of the Ystradgynlais attack at bay during the early stages of the match. Throughout this early pressure it was pleasing to see that everyone took their defensive duties seriously and all put in a solid defensive effort to keep the visitors out and the scores level.

After soaking up all the early pressure Brecon managed to score two breakaway tries and then crafted one further try which was converted. Ystradgynlais kept up the pressure and scored their own breakaway try just before the halftime whistle.  At half time and much against the run of play the home team were ahead on the scoreboard.

Brecon started the second half in better fettle with the forwards securing quality ball in both the scrum and to a lesser degree at the lineout thus providing an adequate flow of possession to allow their back division to release and spread the ball to challenge the visitors defence.

Up front the contest was "competitive" both in the set piece and loose with both teams giving their absolute all.  Brecon through their attacking runners scored two further tries before Ystradgynlais responded with two tries themselves before the final whistle.

After an improved performance in the second half the game was significantly closer than the 33-19 final score suggests - although as ever there are areas to work on in training Friday evening.
