Brecon RFC under 14s made an impressive start to the new rugby season by securing an emphatic 59-7 pts win over Abercwmboi RFC at Parc de Pugh last Sunday.

As with all Brecon RFC age groups including the senior teams the under 14s sported their new red and white band strip.

Brecon had several new players in both backs and forwards the team jelled well and with new rules at this age group allowing lifting and contested lineouts for the first time, Matthew Williams and Dewi Lewis secured good possession from the delivery of hooker Glyn Powell.

With a relatively inexperienced pack one of the most pleasing aspect of the game was the way the forwards performed both going forward and in defence with the front row of Glyn Powell, Dan Morris and Ifor Thomas, replacement prop Gareth Stroud, second row Dewi Worwood and Matthew Williams, Brychan Davies & Jack Jones on the flanks and Iwan Havard as number eight.

Brecon’s back division have been the envy of opponents for a number of years - this season looks to be keeping up that tradition with handling and moves that wouldn’t have looked out of place at senior level. Scrum half Dan Hiscocks was menacing at the base of the scrum and ran in four tries while Ben Griffin consistently outpaced the Abercwboi defence crossing the try line five times, outside centre Tom Preece fed wingers Bradley Hemminds and Iestyn Havard who also placed his name on the score sheet as did new recruit Oliver Lewis. Jacob Beetham added to the points tally with a number of conversions.

Abercwmboi ran in a late consolation try and conversion but both players and supporters must be applauded by the way they respectfully conducted themselves on what was a heavy defeat.
